I Taught Gen Ed Today…

I’m the special ed teacher for Elementary 2. That’s 3 classrooms with mixed grades of 4-6. Two of the classrooms were on a field trip and the other classroom the teacher was sick. I had planned on getting a lot of organizing stuf done after I met the minutes with the 2 of my students in that class. In the end, the sub didn’t show up and it made most sense for me to go in there.

I didn’t mind it, but it was really obvious that this teacher and I would run our classrooms completely different. He’s more of a go-with-the-flow and I’m more of a structured-raise-your-hand-straight-lines-don’t talk-in-the-hallways-other-children-are-still-learning kind of teacher. I’m not super strict, there’s a time for play, but there is a time for kids to buckle down.

I didn’t have to teach any lessons. I supervised work time, worked with the only kid in the class that was there on my caseload, and did a read aloud.

I wonder what I’d be like as a gen ed teacher. Sometimes I don’t think I ‘d like it, but then again they aren’t my kids.
